AWS Cloud Design Patterns Every Solutions Architect Should Know
This guide breaks down the essential AWS cloud architecture design patterns used to build resilient, scalable, and modernized applications. Each pattern is explained with its intent, real-world scenarios, the specific AWS services used to implement it, and key trade-offs — all mapped back to the AWS Well-Architected Framework's six pillars. Whether you're migrating a monolith, handling distributed transactions, or designing event-driven systems, this reference will help you choose the right pattern for the right problem.

- What Makes an Architecture Well-Architected10m
- Core Cloud Design Principles11m
- Monolith vs. Microservices vs. Serverless: Choosing a Starting Point9m
- How to Evaluate and Select a Design Pattern10m
What you'll learn
- Evaluate and select the right design pattern for a given architectural problem using a structured decision framework, rather than defaulting to familiar patterns
- Design multi-region, fault-tolerant systems that meet defined availability, RTO, and RPO targets
- Apply security patterns (Gatekeeper, Valet Key, Quarantine, Federated Identity) to protect multi-tenant systems and sensitive data flows
- Architect asynchronous, event-driven systems using queues, sagas, and idempotent consumers to handle failure and scale gracefully
- Balance reliability, performance, and cost trade-offs when composing patterns into a complete solution, and justify those trade-offs against the AWS/Azure Well-Architected pillars
- Modernize legacy or monolithic systems incrementally using the Strangler Fig and Anti-Corruption Layer patterns without a full rewrite
Prerequisites
- Working knowledge of at least one major cloud provider (AWS or Azure), including core compute, storage, and networking services
- Experience designing or maintaining a production system, ideally with some exposure to microservices or distributed architectures
- Familiarity with REST APIs, message queues, and relational databases at a practical level
- Comfort reading architecture diagrams and reasoning about trade-offs, not just implementation steps
- Basic understanding of CI/CD and deployment concepts
